Reid Park Zoo’s Collection of Modern Day Dinosaurs
Could it be possible that a small group of dinosaurs survived and in fact live among us today? There are almost 10,000 species of these animals and they are found on every continent. This time on “Zoo News” you’ll meet the only animals that have feathers; Reid Park Zoo’s birds and learn what makes them so unique. What’s the world’s largest bird? A Gift for the Future
Reid Park Zoo is the home for some of the world’s most endangered species, including the Grevy’s Zebra. In the wild there are fewer than 2,500 Grevy’s Zebra left in the world, but thanks to Reid Park Zoo’s breeding program we can add one more to that number. This time on “Zoo News” you’ll meet the newest addition to the collection, Adia (which means gift in Swahili). Hear how her birth will help ensure that your great-grandchildren will be able to enjoy Grevy’s Zebra for years to come.

2006: A Year in Review
Reid Park Zoo made some great strides in 2006. The rhinos were moved into a great new exhibit, the new giraffe encounter was opened and so much more. In this special edition of “Zoo News” take a look back at the stories we covered last year. Plus, curator, Scott Barton lets us in on some of his funniest out-takes and gives us permission to enjoy them at his expense. All in a Day’s Work
This time on “Zoo News” you’ll meet Alisha Brewer. Like most parents she is responsible for making wake up calls, serving breakfast, giving medicine and putting toys away. The difference is Alisha does it as part of her job. She’s a zookeeper and her kids aren’t the two-legged kind, they’re animals. Go behind-the-scenes and see what it’s really like to work at Reid Park Zoo. You might be surprised at what the job entails. Ever wonder which animal has the smelliest poop? This isn’t just the story of Reid Park Zoo’s three bears (species, that is), it’s the story of the king of bears everywhere. You’ll meet Kobe, the feisty, female polar bear and see how she was introduced to Boris, her male roommate. What do polar bears do besides play and swim? Curator, Scott Barton tells you about their schedules and how their training helped determine that Kobe needed dental work. How many dentists does it take to perform a root canal on a polar bear? Up Close and Personal
They can grow up to 18 feet tall and weigh as much as 3,000 pounds! Reid Park Zoo has three of these African animals in their collection. Thanks to a generous donation by Elayne and Jerry Feder, you can now feed them! Join Curator, Scott Barton and co-host Renee, as they take you out onto the new giraffe encounter where the public can feed the giraffe. Meet Yebo, Denver and Texas and discover what makes them unique so you can tell them apart. Learn what the giraffe eat, then plan a visit to the zoo so YOU can do the feeding. Don't Call Me a Monkey!
If she looks like a monkey, swings like a monkey, she must be a monkey…right? Wrong! This time on "Zoo News" we'll introduce you to Moms Mabley, the adult female in the family group of gibbons, known also by zoo folk as a lesser ape. Didn't see her on exhibit for a couple of months? The sweet-faced, yodeling, gymnast broke her arm! Curator, Scott Barton, takes you through every step of her eight-week recovery. If you've got a weak stomach, you might want to cover your eyes for a bit during the surgery (let's just say she'd have a delay going through a metal detector), but be ready to quickly uncover your eyes. Teachers Head to the Classroom
Most of us can recall having taken field trips to the zoo as a kid. It was fun to spend time with our friends and to see some amazing animals. Reid Park Zoo had a special guest recently with a goal of making those trips a learning experience. Meet Shellye Valauskas, from the Bronx Zoo, as she trains elementary school teachers how to use the zoo as an educational resource. Curator, Scott Barton leads you through the workshop activities from the classroom to the zoo’s kitchen. Learn what shape, size and diet can tell us about an animal then visit your outdoor classroom. It’s Moving Day!
What was yours like? Did you have a lot of boxes, some friends over and a big truck? Moving day at a zoo is very similar except on a much larger scale. Eight months of planning and Yabonga and Zibulo, Reid Park Zoo’s African White Rhinos, are ready to be moved into their new exhibit. So you’re interested in becoming a zookeeper…you’re not the only one. Join the Zookeeper in Training Program to get a behind-the-scenes look at what the job entails at Reid Park Zoo. Curator, Scott Barton has a special nine-year old co-host, Taylor, who leads you through the program. Taste what’s on the menu in the kitchen, examine the health center and get the poop on the giraffe barn. Bring your old clothes because getting wet and slobbered are definite possibilities! Keep the Change
These animals live in the water, always seem to be hiding and they rarely move. Who are they? They are the South American Dwarf Caiman. This time on “Zoo News” you’ll see the crocodile hunters at Reid Park Zoo in action…searching through the murky water, perching on a log & finally catching the caiman without using tranquilizer darts!
